The Waves.
The waves is a project bringing together artists and academics to explore grief experienced during the Covid 19 pandemic. Musician Karen Underhill and Dr Ruth Raynor came together to run a creative project and talk to women who lost loved ones at a time when the world was in lockdown. From the project a play emerged which we are currently developing thorough stages of R and D in partnership with Newcastle University and Alphabetti Theatre.
When Katherine’s husband dies unexpectedly at the start of the pandemic she is faced with nothing but four walls to share her grief. The house takes on a life of its own and begins to challenge everything she thought was true.
‘The Waves’ is an emotionally-charged new play inspired by workshops with those who lost loved ones during Covid-19. Renowned psychologist Angela Kennedy said ‘it is through such creative performances that we collectively heal, make sense of difficult times and process the emotions so they are easier to live alongside. Grief does indeed come in waves but this play gives us a chance to remember, perhaps for the first time, and through that remembrance find a new appreciation of each other
