The Entertainer
by Hamzeh Al Hussien
After the success of Hamzeh's debut show, the award winning Penguin, which continues to tour around the UK and internationally, and his subsequent career in the industry as an actor and entertainer he is now in the process of making his second solo show - The Entertainer. A show based in fiction but inspired by real life stories of disabled performers working in the entertainment industry.
The Entertainer follows Nizar, a disabled Syrian man who finds himself embroiled in the world of entertainment attending parties and clubs to entertain drunken British people at hen and stag dos, in clubs, pubs and exclusive VIP events. He learns about British culture, the best and worst parts as he travels around, exploring the UK for the first time and meeting an array of characters from all walks of life. The Entertainer will be a show and a party that the audience is invited into. Both celebratory and uncomfortable as Hamzeh explores the line between empowerment and exploitation in the entertainment world and takes a fresh look at British culture through the eyes of someone new to the country.
Hamzeh and the creative team around him have started Research and Development for the new show which he hopes to bring to stages around the UK and beyond in 2027. The process so far has involved collecting stories and experiences, bringing together some of the creative team and imagining what the feel, vibe and style of the show will be. So far we know the show will include comedy and clowning, direct address storytelling, lots of music and audience interaction.
